What happened to the SWS?

Howdy.

So, Cerise and I have some things to explain; some things regarding how we said we would come back in August and then we never did, why there has been almost no activity on this blog for months, what happened to all the old council members, etc. This is gonna be a long post.

To tell the truth, we just don't know what to do with the society anymore.

We both want to keep this thing running, we really do, but we just can't. We don't have any long-term motivation to actually keep it alive and functioning. We genuinely wanted to revive it back in August, and while I can't speak for Cerise, setting a deadline for ourselves was just exhausting and our motivation diminished faster than we could work.

Personally, part of the reason I want to revive it is that I seriously regret how I acted back in late 2016. I was going through a depressive phase and, honestly, the way I acted back then was just downright pathetic. Sure, I was a good agent, but what's the point of being a good agent if you don't have a good attitude to back it up? I want to prove to you guys that I'm not just some bitter jerk who constantly whines about how "bad" her life is and hopefully make it up to you.

The bad attitude point rings true for most of the agents in 2016 as well. A lot of the agents, ourselves included, were very hostile towards rookies and other agents. Being frustrated with rookies or getting overwhelmed during recruiting is one thing - persistently insulting and being standoffish towards newer agents is another. Since we all acted this way, we never saw any problem with it, so we just sat there and looked the other way while we wondered why every new agent got pushed away from us or left after a day or two.

And then there's the issue with all the other council members. Most of them quit or straight up disappeared without a trace, and some of them we just don't want to associate with anymore due to some events that occurred during the time we’ve been closed. I'm willing to talk about what happened to the ones I know about and was personally involved with, but preferably through the chat room. On top of this, most of, if not all of our agents either went inactive or left us with no way to contact them. This means that we would have little to no one around if we were to reopen.

So, without any other council members or agents, we need to go back to the drawing board on our own if we want to continue the society. As much as we’d all like to, we can't exactly just say "SOCIETY'S OPEN LOL" and have everything go back to the way it was. This operation has been dormant for many months now and things aren’t going to resume that easily. We have to start over and rebuild the society from the ground up if we want any chance of getting things back to the way they used to be. We need new rules and our own revised system that can fit both us and our agents with minimal slip-ups. While I've always admired the SWS for being considerably more coordinated and structured than other scam catching teams, there was much more disorganization, confusion, and general laziness going on behind the scenes during 2016 than you may think. People were slacking off, communication was poor, we didn’t even have a real requirement system for promoting agents, which often led to council members stringing agents along with the promise of “you’ll be promoted soon, you just need to work more” for weeks or even months on end.

All in all, Cerise and I do want to start the society back up again. We both miss the good times we had with the other agents. I miss looking forward to getting on chat everyday and having a family of people to come back to. Despite each and every one of its flaws, I felt at home in the SWS and I miss the sense of familiarity I once had with it. I know the society can’t last forever, nothing can, but I don’t want it to end on such a sour note. I don’t want it to be associated with petty internet drama rather than a group of caring people making Animal Jam a safer place.

I’m going to start being more active on chat, and you can direct any personal questions to me there since I don’t feel comfortable with giving out my Email in the comments. I want to thank all of you for the support you’ve shown over the years. We won’t necessarily be accepting any sign-ups for at least a little while, but we would greatly appreciate it if you could speak up with any thoughts or suggestions. We haven’t made any final decisions yet, but we will update you if something major happens.

Kudos to you if you made it this far. Let’s make 2018 a better year. Have a good one.

  1. I quit the society long ago but i think that I remember you. It was dumb of the council to make you one of them. You lied so much too the council and the agents~ but they still thought you would be a good part of it. Just shows there decline in good leadership, i guess.

    1. You must be thinking of someone else, because I can assure you Vic was one of the better agents we had and she never did anything of the sort. If anything, she deserved to be a council member above most of the people who were in the council to begin with.

    2. lol nice try buddy but I quit as an agent in 2014 after being there for a week or two and then rejoined in 2016. i don't see how i could have some sort of reputation for "lying so much to the council and the agents" after i wasn't even there for a month. in my time in the society i've never been called out or punished for lying either but then again you are saying that straight to our faces so i don't know who you're trying to fool lol

    3. (Im the same anonymous as earlier) Sorry for my rude remark about the decline in the leadership of the society earlier, i wasnt exactly being very rational at the time because of the pure outrage i felt. From what i remember hearing about council member vic, he was part of a big scandal or something. if he can promise me he has never mislead, or lied to the council, i think i would be willing to except this new leadership.

    4. the society went through so many scandals in 2016 that i can't even keep track of them all. i never tried to mislead or lie to or take advantage of the council at all, quite the opposite actually. the only thing i think you could be talking about was when i tried to drum up drama sometime last year when i wasn't even in the society, and that was forever ago. i get you were mad but it's really disrespectful to say something like that on a post like this that's trying to be hopeful for the future and honestly i am so sick of comments degrading the council :/
i accept your apology anyways, though

  2. Hey guys, it's (former) Council Member Fem here. I apologize for being so inactive; school and extracurriculars are really catching up to me. Seriously, the jump from Gr. 10 to 11 is huge, so I won't be able to help out, as much as I want to.
I do remember, however, two years or so back, I compiled a doc with all the suggestions/changes I wanted AJSWS to review. I'll try to find it again and put a link for it in a blog post draft, although I won't guarantee that I will be able to.
Anyways, I hope that AJSWS will be more successful than it was in former years; the first step is to acknowledge all the mistakes that were made, and then rectify them.
If you guys need any help or just want to chat, you can always email me :) I may not be able to respond for a long time though.

    Good luck,

    Fem

  3. It'll be interesting to see how well this goes again. I can't exactly say I enjoyed everything about being in the society, but I liked recruiting and the few community service things we did, and posting. My abysmal social skills kinda made me just want to post and avoid everyone else, though, so that was pretty much all I did. So good luck with this project.

  4. I have a suggestion. :) About a half a year back, I created a club for scam catchers to just meet up/talk about scammers they've seen and get help if they need it. It was a club for people who wanted to start scam watching too, so people could learn how to scam watch, getting trained by scam watchers in the club. We meeted up once every week, and it was just a fun place to hangout, get to know other scam watchers, and get back up on scam watching cases. If you guys are looking for something different, laid back, and maybe a little less stressful trying to keep everything in order, maybe you could do something like this.

    1. Thank you for your suggestion, but that's not the direction we want the society to go. We've always appreciated the way we operated and how we approached scammers, and making such a change would take away most of what made us love this team.

  5. I'm honestly quite surprised you both are willing to "revive" the sense of community this place once had, and while I do believe that's a wonderful thing to look forward to, I don't know if the sense of the community here would be the same as it was in 2015. The Animal Jam blogging community is practically dead - which is usually most discouraging - which is why I'm surprised you two are trying to rebuild it from the ground up again.
If it really is just you two, it'd be difficult, as you've lost some head leaders/great agents and all (hopefully not lost in negative ways), but hopefully you c a n bring back scam watching to AJ again.
Anyways, best of luck to you both, I hope your lives are going well/much better since I last had seen this place. Best wishes.

    1. thank you very much dude! i have been doubtful that the society will truly be the same as it once was, but i'm hopeful that it will still be successful even if it isn't quite the same. i have been doing a whole lot better than i was in 2016 so i'm eager to lead the society with a new attitude. again, thank you, have a good one

  6. I have a question for any of the council members. So back when before the SWS shut down, I was an agent. Since it's back and running again, and I have decided to come out of retirement from scam watching, I was wondering if I would still be an agent or if I would have to wait a little bit. Even if I would have to wait awhile, I am still willing to help out with anything. Thanks!

    1. it depends on how much experience you had previously as an agent, but we'd be happy to have you back either way

    2. Okay,my username on AJ is Kalluss.

Here's just a quick summary of my experience: In 2014 and early 2015, I was an active viewer (have been since then :D) of the blog and joined later that year I believe. Being an active viewer, I went to some of the events the SWS hosted for viewers and agents. In the SWS, I think I was only at the rookie rank, then took a hiatus on AJ. I came back I think a few months before the SWS closed. I've been scam watching since 2014.
